Here's a free idea, original with me as far as I know (I didn't botherYes, but horribly broken with regards physics, AFAICT. Unless you propose small "magic" suns orbiting a large planet.
doing a Prior Discovery search), but obviously influenced by other
things (such as moons in Faerun).
Actually not "horribly broken". It's recently been proven that there
can be planetary bodies in trinary systems (they found one). I
seriously doubt that it'd be inhabitable, but a planet can exist in
such a system.
You really needed to read the rest of my post, it explained (as well as I can in an ASCII medium) just how various trinary star systems could support a planet.
Option 1 is the one you're referring to, trinaries are pretty much all a close binary with a very distant third, IIRC. The others are more interesting from a lighting perspective though.
Oh, and standard opinion seems to be that everything has planets in some form or another, unless it's gone boom. With all the close gasballs we're finding they've got to be pretty thick.
And no, I'm not proposing "magic" suns.
Nothing wrong with bright moons in fantasy, but you are proposing magic something.
I'm proposing a far-off blue, a nearer yellow, and a close red. The planet should most probably orbit the red in order to achieve the sequencing I described (fast red, medium yellow, slow blue),
but it could be that having it orbit the yellow and going fast
yellow, medium red, slow blue might be equally acceptable.
A planet will be tidally locked orbitting a small red close enough for warmth, and it'd all get spat out anywhere near a binary. Your orbital periods are *totally* out of whack. That might seem picky for a fantasy world, but the "distant" stars *have* to have periods in terms of hundreads of years. Otherwise they're not stars, they're moons.
Stick a few brown dwarfs together and you can shrink the orbits down to decades, but that's all going to be kinda dark and cold.
Orbiting the blue would be... problematic, I think.
Just do it further out, with a good strong magnetic feild and a nice thick atmosphere. You'd never see through the clouds, so it would just be "light clouds" and "dark clouds" in your cycles, but still good.
