North Carolina Transportation Museum
at Spencer has a lot of background on
the original facility, which was a repair
depot for steam engines. Much later
timeframe than your conversation, but
it is an eyeopener of how much
maintenance these beasties took, and
why they were phased out. Service life
between rebuilds makes you wonder
how they made money. I don't recall
numbers, but it was bad.
