* Cleric: The book suggests giving clerics access to no skill groups. That's right -- *none*. To hell with that. My first thought is to give him Academia (Appraise, Concentration, Decipher Script, Heal, Knowledge, Speak Language). This is a huge boost, but IME clerics are always wanting for more skill points, and despite their power, they still seem to be unattractive to most players. So, more skills may be a good thing. My only problem with this solution is that Appraise, Decipher Script, and Speak Languages seem a little out of place, although they can be explained away if you're willing to stretch a little. (Appraise - for religious artifacts; Decipher Script - for ancient religious texts in long-forgotten tongues; Speak Languages - for converting furrigners.)
As far as those skills seeming out of place, the only one I agree with you on is Appraise and that mainly because I just think it's in the wrong group to begin with. Facility with languages, far beyond that of the common folk (who themselves often spoke more than one language), is perfect for medieval clergy.
Thanks, Jeff. Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I like it. Maybe I'll just remove Appraise from that skill group -- you're right that it is a bit out of place with the other skills in Academia.
