Energy Substitution Questions

I'm working on a Sorcerer build and I want to maximize the characters versatility, so I'm taking Energy Substitution (Cold). This has brought up two question for me...

1) The Orb of Acid spell (CA) does direct acid damage plus a secondary Sickening effect. If you apply the ES Feat to it the descriptor changes from Acid to Cold and it now does cold damage. Does the secondary effect remain Sickening or does it now have the secondary effect of an Orb of Cold (Blindness)?

2) If you apply the ES Feat to a Magic Missile spell the descriptor changes from Force and becomes Cold as well. It now does cold damage. Would the altered Magic Missile spell penetrate a Shield spell now as it is no longer a Force effect?

Since you're changing the energy type, it changes the secondary effect when the secondary effect is based on the energy type, as is the case with the various ORB spells. ... Would the altered Magic Missile spell penetrate a Shield spell now as it is no longer a Force effect? ...

Since you're changing the energy type, it changes the secondary effect when the secondary effect is based on the energy type, as is the case with the various ORB spells. ...
