[d20 Modern] Book Recommendation

Happy Halloween, all. I got a book for my birthday recently that I
almost finished in one sitting. If you haven't yet had the unease, I
strongly recommend Jon Ronson's "The Men Who Stare At Goats."

It is a nonfiction look at the U.S. Military's interest in the
paranormal, and how this interest has filtered all the way to the
current "War on Terror," interrogation techniques at Abu Ghraib,
nonlethal weapons, etc. Although it's written very entertainingly with
lots of dialogue, and some parts will have you howling with laughter
with the ridiculousness of some of the situations, other parts will
make your skin crawl. Even so, while the accounts of Ronson's
interviews with current and past high-level military officers (many of
which seem to have more than one screw loose) are quite interesting,
there isn't much in the way of concrete evidence or documentation to
back up what is presented. Very appropriate Halloween reading, at the
least, but take it with a grain of salt.
Anyway, back to topic, this book is seething with inspirations for a
d20 Modern game, especially one that owes anything to X-Files' brand of
supernatural conspiracy and coverup. Whether or not you buy into what
Ronson is selling here, it would be very easy to work this weirdness
into a campaign.
