I was curious and read some reviews of it this morning (and now have a
Jones to watch it again).

I saw a few reviews that described the dumbness as being (probably) on
purpose:

"... it was at least consistently and knowingly stupid."

"At its worst, most of this movie comes across as smart people making
a knowingly stupid film."

I can't say that they were doing it as a parody of 80s S&S films --
parodies tend to be fairly unsubtle -- but they seemed to take the
premise of the movie and follow through reasonably intelligently.

.. Gore and Kutchek were put in the mines as children and brought up as
slaves. They *are* going to be pretty uneducated, and likely not very
smart (not taught now to reason).

.. They have bugger all for social skills.

.. They are very, very lucky.

The characters are somewhat reasonably protrayed. They *aren't* smart.
They *aren't* socially adept. They *are* big and strong.

They're dumb barbarians. What else would you expect?
