"I'm not dead yet."
-Monty Python, Holy Grail
From its high vantage point the machine watched. It's sensors coldlycollecting every detail. Recording every nuance of the organics
behavior. Oil shortages where becoming more common, the creatures had
begun diverting their food supply into fuel at the expense of feeding
their populations. It's predictive heuristics forecast radiological
warfare was not far off. The isotopes available on this world would
make that an especially effective affair. Good for the machine. Many
of it's strongholds had fell. But some remained. All it needed was
one...

Hvy Metal II has had 34 updates so far. Global oil resources are
running dry at an alarming pace. Several times strategic oil reserves
have been captured by invading neighbors, only to be fed quickly to a
ravenous industrial-military complex. Increasing amounts of food are
being turned into biofuel now.
Two powerful alliances emerged: beep / Baldoria, and Lowland /
Loc-Nar. Lowland is also allied with DonQuixote, who is allied with
Wales. The usual tangle of NA's complicates this even further.
The ominous clicking of Geiger counters has been overheard in some
places.
The conflict between Wales and DonQuixote over the Aridon spoils was
ended amicably, after violence had led to a stalemate.
This freed Wales to launch a preventive attack on his new neighbor
1EyedMonster, who was busily mopping up the last RimFire sectors.
Wales took a buffer, then dug in deep. This worked reasonably well
until 1EyedMonster managed to do serious damage to the Welsh airforce.
A suprise attack by DonQuixote on 1EyedMonster relieved some pressure
there.
The battle for TheDiplomat rages on. After starting a war with
Dethklok, TheDiplomat was attacked by beep. The Diplomat has stood up
with admirable courage to the mighty beep war machine for eleven
updates so far. beep's advance has been slow, but brutally steady.
Dethklok's has been less effective.
Lowland shifted attention from beep to Baldoria, who was already
engaged by DonQuixote. The offensive stalled after initial success,
and the enemies are now locked in a bloody battle of attrition.
The tech race is too close to call. Dethklok, Lowland and Metallica
are in the lead.

Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Thu Jul 10 06:53:02 2008} Last seen forgetting to put updates on the newsgroup.
Ha! Five bars for visitor.
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Thu Jul 10 06:56:51 2008A player criticized the production efficiency of biofuel plants.
All products depending on tech (or any other level) have a minimum
level "min" and a lag "lag". "show se c" shows them. Production
efficiency at the minimum level is always precisely zero. It rises to
0.5 at level min+lag, and to 0.67 at level min+2*lag. info Quick-ref
has the exact formula.
The lag is usually 10, i.e. you get quite reasonable efficiency very
quickly after you exceed the minimum tech. Except for biofuel, where
the lag is 80.
So, if your biofuel production efficiency is useless right now, keep
researching and try again with better technology.
Announcement from beep, (#1) dated Thu Jul 10 07:21:42 2008in other words "alternative fuels don't make sense, just keep drilling";
typical republican/neo-con response.
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Thu Jul 10 07:32:00 2008Didn't you mean "just keep robbing neighbors"?
Announcement from beep, (#1) dated Thu Jul 10 07:38:40 2008wake up people! the oil _will_ run out! someday soon oil will
become to precious to be burned as gasoline! my brother (who works for
an ExxonMobil plastics plant) assures me that is true; time to join
the green revolution!
after all, would you rather pollute the planet or build more guns and tech?

It might be for others in the game or a deity.
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Tue Jul 15 13:25:22 2008A player inquired about what exactly does or does not work with
auto-supply. This is actually documented in info Hvy-Metal:
Automatic shell supply for sector flak, ship flak and ship missile
defense is disabled, because its bugs interfere with Hvy Metal
modifications. Same for automatic supply of land units on loading
them onto ships or land units.
The player additionally asked about artillery units in particular.
The only place where we touched resupply of land units is loading them
onto ships and land trains. Places we did not touch:
* fire command: does not auto-supply since 4.3.12 (actually, it does,
but it requires at least one shell before auto-supply, which makes
it useless)
* Interdiction: never auto-supplied
* Return fire: does auto-supply
* Support fire: does auto-supply
* Flak: does not require shells
* Attack: does auto-supply
* Reaction: does auto-supply (I think)
* lmine command: does auto-supply.

The Altima is there as an 'ooo it's sexy' car
the others are there because they get 35MPG and don't
cost over 20K
and they'll all be in black.
oh, and I plan to drive the wheels off it
so it has to be durable as hell
Announcement from DonQuixote, (#6) dated Tue Jul 15 13:56:46 2008Baldoria should get the Nobel Cash Management Award.

Which part of "never" was unclear? ;)
Whether the fortress gun needs to be tweaked is a different topic.
You're all invited to discuss it, but actual changes have to wait
until next game.
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Wed Jul 16 16:04:31 2008A player inquired whether aau need guns or shells loaded to fire flak.
They do not.
Announcement from TheDiplomat, (#4) dated Wed Jul 16 23:12:33 2008Seems like I found a use for the 5 shot wonders after all.

can you beat Thunderhorse on Expert? ;)
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Sat Jul 19 21:31:34 2008A player inquired about plane repairs on a carrier.
Every two mil on a carrier contribute 0.01 work per etu to each plane.
However, the efficiency gain is divided by three, unless the carrier
sits in an airfield, and can't go beyond 80%.
Example: consider a carrier with 100m that carries a 30% f2 and a 20%
jf1. The military provide 30 work to each plane. f2s can gain up to
93%, jf1 up to 75%, to a limit of 100%. The 30% f2 gains 70% (+93%
cut off at 100% new eff), divided by 3, yielding 23%, new efficiency
53%. The 20% jf1 gains 70% (+75% cut off at 100%), divided by 3,
yielding 23%, new efficiency 43%.
I don't claim this makes much sense.
You can predict repairs by fooling around with stop and budget. A
neweff command for planes and such would be useful.
Announcement from Loc-Nar, (#3) dated Mon Jul 21 09:47:34 2008If I could trust my remaining brain cells,
pei had some commands for that already:
pneweff |tag0
but I'm not sure whether those commands would be able to cope
with stop/start of the current server....

callous person, they were peasants fleeing the crushing poverty
and dispair of their homeland (guess who) just hoping to make a
better life in the benevolent beep hegemony. unfortunately for
them the swells living in the ritzy Hyannisport of Lowland across
the way didn't want their view spoiled by the humble hovels of
working class folk and invoked the NIMBY principle.

Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Thu Jul 24 21:23:12 2008Bug alert: missile interdiction appears to ignore the mission range.
Workaround: use the range command to reduce the range.
beep earns five bars of gold for reporting this bug.

Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Thu Jul 24 22:08:41 2008} It always has ignored range...
.... which was always wrong. info mission clearly documents that
interdiction missions obey the op-area.
Since I wasn't aware of the bug, reporting it earned gold bars. Even
if everybody else had known it for years.
Announcement from beep, (#1) dated Thu Jul 24 22:54:03 2008there be a word for peoples who know about bugs but don't report them
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Fri Jul 25 08:57:15 2008I think one could be excused for mistakenly assuming that missile
interdiction worked as designed.
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Fri Jul 25 08:57:25 2008I fixed the missile interdiction bug. Please continue to report bugs!
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Fri Jul 25 21:24:43 2008Okay folks, the truth about automatic supply and interdiction.
Artillery have always drawn shells to fire interdiction, but unlike
ships and unlike for support and return fire only when they already
had some.
When I refactored the firing code for 4.3.12, I accidentally removed
the special case for interdicting artillery: since then, they draw
shells for interdiction just like for return fire and support fire.
Sorry about the misinformation! Baldoria wins five bars for
disbelieving it.
Announcement from Dethklok, (#16) dated Sat Jul 26 14:40:16 2008So are you saying they always autosupply for for
interdiction, support and return fire or they only do so
if they have one or more shells when out of supply?
Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Sat Jul 26 16:04:00 2008Right before the gun fires, it checks whether it has sufficient shells
for one salvo, and it it hasn't, it supplies just enough shells for
this salvo. If it supplies before firing, it'll have no shells left
after firing.
Before 4.3.12, there was an additional condition for land units firing
interdiction: fire only if the land unit has shells, before supply.
Example: hat, 4s per salvo, 15s in magazine, a series firing triggers
(interdiction, support, return fire):
Trigger Supplies? Fires? Magazine
1 no yes 11s
2 no yes 7s
3 no yes 3s
4 1s yes 0s
5+ 4s yes 0s except for:
5+ 0s no 0s interdiction before 4.3.12
