So I'm doing routine backups (now that I got some more jewel cases) of the
files I've downloaded recently. I have one folder with some notes and a
linux iso (systemrescuecd-x86-1.0.1.iso). I figured I'd compress it so I
use the context button to make a zip with the "optimize for best
compression" option selected. Before it was 191MB. After 194MB. Wait, I
did select best compression, right? Even just storing it with no
compression shouldn't increase the size.
Guess I'll try WinRAR. Hmmm, that iso is pretty well packed. WinRAR gets
me only about 800K savings.
Oh well, I thought the Winzip results were interesting.
WinZip gets pretty squirrely sometimes with big text files (compressed
to about 300 MB) too. The latest version seems to be doing a lot
better, but it would be really nice if everyone (at least the
everyones I deal with) would just go to WinRAR.
Winzip was the first piece of shareware I ever bought! Internet Marauder
now known as Teleport Pro being the second. I lost track after that...
