The idea is to serve high-res images for certain products. However,

it seems to be that most are actually the same image.

That's the idea but why is it not followed? It's not just MS - I've
noticed other sites doing the same thing. I'd understand if it was a new
web page template and they just didn't have the high rez pics for the
older stock, but that's not the case.

I know what you mean. At work, we also serve an "image viewer"
functionality which basically should do the same thing. Most pictures
are about twice the thumbnail size, but thats it.

I think there are actually two ideas combined there:

1. Make it possible to have larger images.
2. Have the images stand "on their own"

While the first one can be safely ignored, the second one is
definitely used.

What's almost as bad is when product photos are just badly taken. For
instance, Newegg.com has terrible photos of many of the products they sell
and to top it off, sometimes they obscure exactly what a customer would be
trying to see with a watermark. I wonder if their photographer even looks
at the final pictures. Taking a pic of a black case with bad lighting so
that literally nothing but the outline can be seen is not the way to sell
products. Maybe he thinks he's shooting iPod adverts?

That's really the one thing where Newegg sucks. At least they usually
have a variety of pics of the product to view.
