Got a new Maxtor 500GB SATAII drive today. I was looking at it and on
the bottom plate where the manufacture code is it says Tonka.
My hard drive is trucky!
Isn't "tonka" just a word that means "will crash soon"? ;P
Seriously, Maxtor? That's the worst brand IMO. Seagate used to be
reputable but they've gone downhill a lot in the last year or so. (The
fact that they recently bought Maxtor may or may not be related to their
recent decline in quality.)
I'd stick with Western Digital or maybe Samsung for desktop machines.
Oh well.
Odd, one drive manufacturer I had the most rouble with was three
Samsung drives. They just did not like XP at all. Besides this
***, all I use are WD.
I really don't much care for Maxtor myself and my only experience
with them was years ago when I drove to Columbus to put a new drive in
his Win98 machine/ When I got there he had supplied me with a Maxtor
10 Gb drive. So I installed it and ran their software from floppy to
set up his drive and copy his partition over. 10 hours later I finally
got to drive back home. I swore I would never buy one and I still
haven't. I was upgrading the doc's puter and had him pick up a drive
at office Depot where he was going. He shows up with two and gives me
one. I was suprised to see they had greatly improved their software.
Now they use a drive-mandated version of Acronis True Image, which is
the program I use for my disk imaging.
So it's becoming my storage drive.
Can't argue too much with "free" I guess. Between the in-fighting/trolls
posting to comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage, I try to keep an eye out to
see what the status quo is for hard drives. WD has been getting the most
praise. Samsung is mentioned sometimes, mostly with reference to
quietness. Seagate is starting to get bad reviews. Maxtor is cursed and
spat upon. I see a lot of dead Maxtors myself, WD not so much. Samsung
isn't popular enough, I don't think, that there's anything to go on for
them.
Anyhow, it's mostly all anecdotal evidence.
