Any advice on what to get, and what to avoid? Around here the entry level
laptops (more like craptops) all tend to be NZ$800-NZ$1000, with small
harddrives, Vista Basic (occasionally it's better) and 512 Meg of RAM,
regardless of the Vista version.

Personally, I've been using a laptop as my main computer for the past
three years. I bought it on the basis of it being cheap (not the
cheapest but about $1200 (Canadian back when the Canadian dollar was
worth much less)) and small (12 inch screen). It has served me well,
admittedly I mainly use it for word processing and web browsing. I
would probably find one of your craptops an upgrade and as much as I
need (although for now I would want to stick with XP if I could). If
your looking to do more (ie games or some other intensive app)
obviously you will need a more powerful computer.

Just an observation, I find what is now considered a small hard drive
(I'm assuming the 30 gigs I've got is small), huge (my brain learned
to think of Hard drive's in terms of MB). Although I guess I've
learned profligacy on that front (Microsoftest blotware design
philosophy probably does not help) as I only have 2.7 gigs left, but I
can't see filling that any time soon.

*chuckles* The first computer I built myself had a Conner (Connor?)
1.06 GB hard drive, and it was -plenty-, even with having the WC Saga
(and its required WIn95) on it. Now, I have roughly twice that in
RAM, and around sixty or so GB in just games.
