It's not that I have a pressing _need_ for a laptop, but being stuck at my

Any advice on what to get, and what to avoid? Around here the entry level
laptops (more like craptops) all tend to be NZ$800-NZ$1000, with small
harddrives, Vista Basic (occasionally it's better) and 512 Meg of RAM,
regardless of the Vista version.
Oh yea, and you talk about not having a pressing need for one, but
after some recent experiences, and a little bit of surveying, I can't
think of much of a reason for adults in general to have anything but a
laptop these days. Even if you do what I do, and plug a real monitor/
keyboard/mouse into mine for most use, you still have the option of
carting it around the house (or around the country) if you so desire.
I did some research and I am still a gamer so a desktop is still needed....
Otherwise I'd do your setup also (and it saves energy), if I don't find
laptop's graphic card option to be rather scary (can't stand share
resources with system RAM).
Now..., I need suggestion as well, which processor would you recommend for
an energy efficient setup? I've been checking for a long time for a
Brisbane core 45watt (or less) setup, and I wonder if Intel's option would
be okay also. I've never used anything but Intel so it's a scary thing to
switch (and have always been using Asus mobos for all the computers I've
built). Also, there are so many chipsets outthere for AMD mobos..., which
one is the most reliable and since I care for energy efficient, which mobo
is generally good for such. I don't care much for integrated parts
(onboard LAN is fine), so if there is some graphics and sound on board,
fine if I can disable it, but otherwise, not a big decision consideration.
Money is also an issue.... I want something <$200 for both mobo and CPU
and can use DDR2-4200 RAM (can't spend too much, like Paulon, it's not a
pressing issue to get one like right now).
BTW, and if there is a laptop option, I think I might think about it too,
since going to school nowadays sometimes requires such... (of course that
can't be <$200...).
