What's your soundcard?
Which one? The onboard is a RealTek ALC883 which Linux has detected but I
haven't got the system working enough to test it yet. The cards in the old one
were an SB16 which I was only using for things like Pagan and Strife - Pagan
should hopefully work in DOSbox now and I've found a native version of Strife.
The main card was an SBLive Audigy thing which only worked at 48khz without
artifacting and ruined several performances which I probably couldn't repeat :P
I'm going to stick with the onboard sound to replace that as there are only two
PCI slots and I'm keeping one spare for a Delta 1010 which I'm thinking of
getting to back up my multitrack tapes.
I also have an Edirol UA-25 acting as an external converter off the USB bus,
although it has recently started to make nasty sounds which it did not do before
so I'm looking to augment it with a UA-5 which can be hacked to act as a
standalone AD converter.
Other 'soundcards' include a MIDIMAN 4x4 and Korg Triton.
SBLive or Audigy? I've had Live! and it was problematic. Audigy is better
and Audigy 2's sound is much cleaner than the first Audigy. I've yet to
upgrade to x-Fi but I am thinking about it (for years now, since it's a low
priority upgrade). Doesn't matter which card you use, make sure it has
gold-plated connectors (and circuit board). Big difference.
I have an X-Fi Extreme Audio card. Man! You should hear the sound
effects in Solitaire!!! I'll bet you with inferior cards don't even
pick up the dirty conversation taking place in the background of
Solitaire!
I am not sure if you need a soundcard for solitarie....
When I put Hank together, I opted for an Audigy 2. I thought it wouldn't
be a big different from Audigy 1, but it was a big improvement (not as big
as from SBLive! to Audigy, of course, since Live! was unbearably noisy).
The sound range is fuller and you can hear a lot more details you couldn't
hear before. Of course a good pair of spekers helps too. No point having
a soundcard that can reproduce a dynamic range of sound, but the
spekars/earphones can't play them.

Sometimes I find myself getting old and a simpleton now.... I just stick
to XP and forget about all the technical issues. Though it's not the best
OS except all those others that have been tried... (hmm... sounds
familiar).
I'm not haviing any major problem with Vista, other than an annoying
problem being unable to rename files if there's very many in the
folder.
Okay.... I would get rather annoyed about it. How many is that though? I
would consider that as a major bug, especially for business. How does
Vista sort files with numbers in its name? Does it go by File1, File2,
File3... File11 etc., or File1, File10, File11?
The problem only manifests itself when there are more files in a
folder than can fit on a single right pane of Windows Explorer.
Anytime you go to rename a file, it slips to the next pane and when
you scroll back, your file is no longer editable. So you right-click it
again, and repeat. No problem if there's few enough files to fit in
under one pane.
