It's a very uninspiring BIOS with not much there.
You're right, now that I look at the system setup screens
<http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4550/syssetup.htm> I
don't see it there either. That makes me think that it's not integrated
into the motherboard despite the motherboard part description.
I never got another card. I've never had a reason to use a network
card before. The connector is there, and yes it's by a USB and under
the printer port. I'll check one more time to make sure what I see
outside matches what I see inside. (Tomorrow when I'm awake so I
don't break anything.)
That's just strange that it's on the motherboard but not mentioned in the
BIOS screens. Looking at the other documentation under networking, I see
one set of pages talking about a 3Com 10/100 network card apparently being
built into the modem. Is the modem a separate card or is its port near
the network port on the back as well? If they're together, maybe that's
why they're not being detected as we'd expect. In the device manager,
when you open up the modem entry, does it say anything about 3Com?

I didn't have a problem with it, as in tried to use it and it didn't
work. The error in device manager was always there... it was hard to
not notice. Although I apparently uninstalled it at some point, for
reasons I don't recall, so it was no longer in the list. When I did
the find new hardware, I had to tell Windows to find a network card
cause it didn't on its own. Don't know if that has any meaning. (Is
that an on-board thing? It doesn't find the sound on its own either.)
I'll try the other D-Link driver in the other post.
BTW, thanks for the help. I knew something had to be a problem, but
the network card didn't even occur to me.
No problem. It's just awkward to do like this. Look at the notes on this
page <http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/harrier/netinst.htm>
in the Windows 2000 section (as close to XP as it comes). When your
machine is booted up, is there a network neighborhood icon on the desktop?
If it's there, then maybe the driver is partially installed (although it
still seems like it should show up in the device manager). Try following
the uninstall steps:
1. Right-click on My Network Places (or Network Neighborhood in XP).
2. Select Properties.
3. Double-click the Local Area Connection icon.
4. Click Configure and then select the Driver tab.
5. Click Uninstall and then click OK to confirm you want to uninstall
the driver.
6. Click OK.
Then reboot and see if Windows doesn't try to load a driver for it when it
comes back up.
