Well, I upgraded the BIOS, and replaced the CPU. The PC is faster, and more stable. I think the latter is an effect of the BIOS upgrade.
Before the upgrade I often had problems with running games like WoW, if I had used the PC for other tasks, especially surfing the net (and especially YouTube). WoW took much longer time starting, and in-game performance was sluggish. Rebooting helped. I noticed from the task manager that CPU load was high, and the amount of memory used for the application on booting the game increased slowly.
Now these problems are gone. I also see that when running the game, CPU load by WoW is generally in the 15-25% range, before the upgrade it was regularly 50%. Unless the previous CPU was defect I can't see how switching CPU from E6300-E6600 could have that much effect (unless it's the increased amount of cache memory that's causing this). However, I ran some tests using Sandra before upgrading, and performance was slower than what could be expected from an E6300 system, and there seemed to be a problem with inter-core communication. Sorry, can't be more specific.
No matter what - everything is on the green now.
The only problem I had was fitting the cooling fan (retail CPU) to the motherboard, but I used the one for the E6300 in stead, after transferring some of the cooling paste.
