It used to be the money. But it's cheaper now. And in fact, AT&T is
always having specials that put it as cheap as my dial-up.
So then I started seriously considering it, but SBC bought them out,
and I hate them and I heard it was turning to Yahoo... so I didn't
bother. My brother got it about a year ago and I let him be the
guinea pig. I wasn't thrilled about the Yahoo email. His email says
sbcglobal, but it's Yahoo.
If you get tired of changing emails, you could go the gmail route like me.
They let you use any pop3 compliant email client if you want and they do
have very good spam filters.
I only use that email for a very few things. My main email account
isn't connected with my ISP. I was more concerned about it being
Yahoo than changing it.
Now it looks as though they've either just made the old AT&T available
again, or possibly even done away with the Yahoo crap, not sure. But,
I was still concerned about losing my web hosting. No matter where I
looked, I could not find this information, nor did anyone I call know
the answer. That is, assuming I could ever convince them that I
wasn't talking about the email storage or "my home page" that's just a
customizable AT&T home page. (I customized the weather.) So I've been
around with this for months now.
Finally got someone today who actually knew what web hosting was, and
even knew what's been available with my dial up. We were on the phone
at least an hour trying to straighten out what's going to happen if I
go to the DSL.
dslreports.com aka broadbandreports.com host some very informative forums
if you have further questions of this type.
Have you taken the phishing quiz? It's says I'm a safety guru. It
was a stupid test though. I missed the myspace one cause of the way
they tried to fake the URL, but I never go there. I managed to get
some of the others I was unfamiliar with cause of obvious things like
asking for too much info after a blocked log-in. Missed the Paypal
email cause I couldn't see them so I just picked one. Both of the
Capital One ones looked fake -- both requiring too much info. (I knew
there was a good reason I got rid of that Capital One card.) Seems
everyone on the forums thought it was stupid, biggest reason being
they didn't even discuss how people got to the fake sites to begin
with.
(I'm still trying to find something that would actually know something
about switching from AT&T's dial up to DSL....)
Interesting... seems only the regional ISPs are getting any A grades,
but also with very few reviews. So even though AT&T has its issues,
it looks to be about as good as the rest. And I do see there's a
difference between AT&T Yahoo and AT&T Midwest. I hope that's good
news.
Well, that was fun. Trouble registering and never got the
verification email. So about two hours later, after taking care of
that and reading what were non-pertinent FAQs, I've finally posted.
So... I do have one question. (For now.) Is there some extra
security precautions I should be taking here? I'm intending to
disconnect at least every night, maybe more often cause there's some
stuff I just don't like doing while online. And speak laymanese
please. :-)
I said "extra" security precautions. :-)
Quit using IE and OE altogether. No excuses! Use Firefox or Opera. I
like to use NoScript and Adblock Plus with my Firefox and only enable
scripting for sites I'm very certain don't contain nasties.
Does "no excuses" include putting bread on the table? I work online,
remember? And I have two choices: use IE, or get the Flash plugin for
Firefox and chance having other problems since it's bad enough with
IE. But, I only use IE when I need the Flash and it's a trusted site,
like some of my investment sites use it. (How I've come to hate
Flash!)
You might as well try it. I use Firefox exclusively, except for
Windows Update, which is the only reason I keep IE on there. I'm too
lazy to just download the updates manually, though it really isn't too
hard to go there just once a month.
Is this a good place to grumble about the fact that more and more
places seem to be giving Firefox problems? Stupid internet.
I could probably have answered this myself more easily if I'd asked
instead: are there any extra security problems other than being
connected all the time? (Which still bugs me.)
Free yourself from the bugs. Don't worry about it. It's nice to be
able to pretty much instant;ly check your local radar weather, etc.
BTW, I only got the slowest speed cause it's the same price as my dial
up. It's still (a max of) like 15 times as fast. For the same price
that still seems a good deal. I'll have to see if I still find
anything annoying and I have no contract so I can change it any time.
And the service thingamagig is just over on the next corner, which I'm
*very* close to.
I'll tell the pr0n sites to prepare for your onslaught!
Hey!
Although pictures are of course one advantage, especially with the
amount of time I spend at eBay and Amazon. And downloads. And
despite what my brother thinks, I am NOT going to start spending all
my time on youtube or anything.
I know this is totally going off, but that reminds me, know how to
keep Acrobat Reader from AUTOmatically starting a download of a new
version? It doesn't bother to ask me. I just catch it partway
through and cancel it. I've looked everywhere and can't find a thing
how to turn that off. That's what I get for upgrading to the version
I have now.
Dump it and get one of the free , tiny .pdf readers like Foxit reader.
