Re: Thunderbird & old email

So what models/brands/etc did you end up getting?

I was limited to the choices in the store (CompUSA), since I wasn't keen on waiting around computerless for one to be shipped. With that in mind I chose for the motherboard the BFG Tech NForce4 motherboard. It was the only of the boards to still offer two IDE channels, which I need since I have yet to buy any SATA hard disks. It also has floppy support, which zero of the other choices had, and how am I supposed to survive without my 5.25" floppy drive!?

It has built-in sound that's better than what I had before, and even has SPDIF output, which my reciever supports, and which I would use if I knew where to find the goofy optical cable it wants me to use. It also features on-board ethernet, so I pretty much don't need expansion cards anymore, save the video card. In a way that's kinda sad. On the other hand, maybe I can find some weird uses for the slots that previously I would not have room for. Ideas?

The processor was the only option that went with it--AMD Athlon 64. The box says "3500+" and "HyperTransport Technology" but I haven't bothered to find out why, or if, I care. The 64 bit aspect seems irrelevent since I am using 32 bit Windows.

The case was a $20 (after rebate) CoolerMaster one, which asserts to be tool free. It's not all it's cracked up to be--the drives stay in place pretty well, but the little tabs to secure component cards are less effective. I also found that the motherboard screws did not quite patch up with the holes on the backplane, but I'm not sure whose fault that is. It's *MUCH* smaller than my old one, but has the same 6 external / 5 internal drive bays, and has very quiet fans (three), which impressed me. My last machine roared like crazy.

As far as my purchase goes, my only disappointment was that it didn't have memory card support, or firewire, but I don't actually care much about firewire, and I am probably better off with an external card reader anyway.

In the end, I bought a somewhat out of date machine, but honestly I don't know what I would gain from the most recent stuff, other than no support for my old hardware and the ability to play games that don't interest me :-P

Today I spent an hour or so cleaning up the old Windows installation, deleting files, etc. Somehow I have 6 GB of .CHK files from the past few year of ChkDsk runs. I feel like an archaeologist peering through piles of now-useless program files, settings, and pagefile and so on, grabbing up the handful of valuable things. It's been a trip down memory lane, like finding my old installation of NASA Worldwind, the pre-Google Earth, or some weird CAD software I had to use for a systems engineering course like four years ago. This installation of Windows had been created around 2002. then upgraded in 2004 to XP, and used continuously since. The motherboard/processor pair was purchased in August 2001.

I also discovered that my old Maxtor hard drive is the loudest item in my system. It will be good to finally be done with it!

How about this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Combining_two_profiles

I will try this, but good grief! Thunderbird is not a new program, it seems nutty that this is not a two- or three-click operation: Import Messages->"Which program?"->Thunderbird->"Specify the location of your old profile"->browse files->"Done!"
