Would I be me otherwise? Maybe I should rename myself to Disagreeable

Wouldn't work. You disagree in too agreeable a fasion.

....

Besides, St George's disagrees with me a lot more often than you do! ;D

Perhaps my choice of words with "brilliant" was poor. I didn't so much
mean those consumed with the furtherment of their subjects so much as
those who were simply very good at them -- even to the point of being
slightly bored by them.

Well, that's the kind that should get out of the subject and do
something worthwhile IMnsHO. I had one of those in geology (don't ask).
If you are a professor, you are _hired_ to be consumed by the
furtherment of your subject.

Yes, that's probably so, even if it isn't directly stated in the job
description.

On a point of trivia, only the head of each department at my university
and the holders of specific chairs were considered professors. All
other academic staff were lecturer, assistant lecturer and the like.

It's somewhat academic (if you'll pardon the pun) anyway -- I've since
decided that whether one is a good or bad teacher doesn't in any way
depend on how well one knows one's field.

I agree. But it does depend on whether one finds the field interesting.

That's going to be a pretty big feature, naturally. Although as Erimess
has pointed out, 'tisn't universal, even then.

That was never a situation in which I found myself academically, because
I chose the wrong degree discipline, and therefore never enjoyed it
enough to want to pursue it beyond graduation.

Somehow I had the feeling it was so. ;)

I might have mentioned it before, once or twice. <:)

I'm not sure if British universities have 'tenure' as such -- it's quite
possible they do and I'm not aware of it, though. As I said, I never
really looked into academia as a job prospect.

Well, tenure or not. Do you have bored professors that stay on their
positions on past merits alone?

Either they're bored, or they're too worried about leaving the Ivory
Towers and entering the real world. But I've seen their like, yes.
