See, my plan is to work for four to five more years, then take an eight month leave of absence and hike the Pacific Crest Trail. See here for more information on that: http://www.pcta.org/about_trail/overview.asp

I guess you don't like swamps? You miss out on them on that trip. :-P

I have spent some time in swamps, and no, I do not particularly care for them. There are plenty of them out near the coast tho, if I decide to go.

You'd need plenty of warm clothes for the desert parts I guess. (At night, because they get cold, obviously. :-P ) And water. Not sure how you'd carry 8 months worth of supplies.

For the supplies, you only carry what you need at the time, and food for several days. You resupply at various points along the way. Water you carry as much as you can, and you fill up at any point you can, at creeks or rivers, or whatever. Also, there are 'Trail Angels' who keep water caches in between the water sources wet.

For your supplies, have a few choices. You can plan out your trip to the letter and send yourself boxes of stuff as you think you will need them. You can try talking someone in to sending you things to the place you are going to next. Or you can send yourself a box of stuff, get the stuff you need, put in the stuff you don't need, and send it along to your next destination.

More seriously, things like that make me miss being able to walk distances without problems. It'd be nice to do some of the NZ tracks, but if you can't walk too far without pain, it's not really a good option. Last time I just went for a walk to, and then down the length of the beach here, I came back limping. :-(

You and me both. I tore up my leg pretty bad almost ten years ago (!) in an accident, and I am trying to work up to it again. I am only back up to two miles a day right now. You have to average something like two miles an -hour- every day for the six months. While carrying your gear, food, and water, no less.

That is why the long time frame before going. I have a ways to go physically.

Still, I predict having lots of Aleve in my supplies every step of the way.
