Oblivion is definitely a Bethesda game, though. The install crashed.
The intro crashed. The menu screen crashed. It crashed a couple times
during gameplay.
No crashes at all for me. It's played very smoothly and well for me. If
I had to nitpick, I'd like to get rid of the "loading next area..." text
(or words to that effect) when you're traveling though the countryside.
A recent visit to the oblivion website offered a useful hint: rename
mpeg2dmx.ax to mpeg2dmx.ax.old. Apparently old versions of that file
can cause problems. God knows what I broke doing that, but I
successfully played a couple hours without a crash, so hopefully
things are looking up.
I agree about the "loading next area" text, though; it really pulls
you out of the game. It seems awfully superfluous too; if not for that
text, I wouldn't even NOTICE. Perhaps it's necessary for the XBox or
something.
Still, assuming Bethesda can get the crashes worked out, I'll probably
keep at it. That's more than I can say about Morrowind. Besides,
something has to keep me occupied until Gothic 3 ;-)
What can I say? It's not crashing for me. I expected it to, especially
after some people's reports but now I'm thinking it must be User Error.
:)
Ah, good ol' PEBKAC? ;-)
Anyway, having put another few hours into the game, I'm more
impressed. Forget the first impressions you get coming out of the
sewer; it doesn't do the game justice (nor does the nearby city). I
got a taste of the real power of the engine whilst walking between
Chorral and Kvatch. The forests are absolutely LUSH, and seeing the
walled city of Kvatch on a hill across a valley; awesome.
The gameplay, on the other hand, still underwhelms. The vast majority
of the NPCs have only one or two things to say - the world feels as
drab and dead and manufactured as any of the other Elder Scrolls
games. Ultima (or Gothic) this is not. On the other hand, the main
quest is more engaging. But after some forays into the dungeons (yawn)
I imagine I'll play the game only for the main quest; unlike most with
RPGs, I won't go out of my way for any of the side quests. The reward
-merely XP or loot versus a real sense of having achieved something in
the gameworld- just doesn't seem to be there for me.
