I think in many of the sciences/engineering it is pretty standard for
people to work with their supervisors (judging from
http://www.phdcomics.com ). However, in the humanities this is not as
often the case. My university has guaranteed five years of "funding"
(can include TA and RA assignments or external scholarships) for all
Phd stream students that may cover basic cost of living. It has been my
good luck to receive a large federal government scholarship. Also, due
to generous parental support I was never hard up for cash even in
undergraduate days and have been basically self-suffecient since I
started graduate school (although since my uni is close to home I still
get a lot of emotional and material support from them).

My supervisor has been a bit hands off so far (but he was on leave for
the past 10 months when I have been in the official research/writing
part of my work). I have never worked for him, but if I did it would
probably be as a TA for one of his courses. We will see how things
develop in the next year and a half or so.

Well, I hope you get this. Anyway it is great to hear of your success.
Good luck for the future.

I think it is you who are mistaken! :)

I am checking (via google, my Chinese server does not like wikipedia
for some reason) and it looks like Chongqing was the capital of Sichuan
during the second world war
(http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9106242) but under the People's
Republic the capital has reverted to Cheng Du.

I guess in Taiwan mainland China's history gets less attention after
1948, eh? :)

Interestingly Chongqinq is larger than Cheng Du (but only by a few
hundred thousand), another case of the largest city not being the
capital.
