Low Online Magazine Readership
Happy Holidays all!
According to google analytics for uschess.org, the October Cl4k
contents page (there are actually various contents pages for CL4k
cause you can access it from the scholastic menu, or the Chess Life
menu or archives, so this is a combined figure) got almost 3000 hits,
over 1800 unique visitors, but many fewer logged in to read an article
(the cover story, Mr.Perfect got about 150 hits). People can be
impatient online so even for members, logging in with a password is a
serious deterrent. It seems hard to break through and get a large % of
the people who visit the index page to log in cause it's easy to get
frustrated and just move on. Some of the people who visit the page are
not members so that explains some of it, but I'm sure more than 5%
are.
I think an email reminder will definitely increase the number of
visits to the index page, but in light of the above, I think every
email should have a prominent reminder about how to login as a member
or what to do if someone lost their password because that is another
huge hurdle to online readership. I think this hurdle is so large esp.
for kids, that I also like the idea from Bill's last email of sending
out three CL4ks per year if it makes sense financially.
The google analytics page was set up by Marty and Hal. I can give
Glenn the password and login info but perhaps it's also a good idea to
get that set up so that only me, Daniel, Mike, Glenn, Joan, etc. can
access it as we're still using the same login info that Marty set up.
I think Mike Nolan uses a separate probably more precise stat package
(?), but I do find google analytics to be very user friendly and easy
to get ballpark figures at a glance.
To answer Michael Atkins' question, there should be a way to track how
many people go to the url via the email. Notice that if you go to this
page: http://main.uschess.org/content/blogcategory/226/469/, you can
remove the slash and the url is still valid. The stat tracker would
pick that up and we could get a pretty decent estimate of how many
people accessed the url via the email. There may be some other way as
well.
Best wishes, Jennifer

If there are just less than 3,000 hits for the Chess Life for Kids
with just over 1800 visits that is very low turnout. With having just
under 150 logins from online members to read the cover story from
members only is a very disturbing low number. In fact, it is not even
broken down with the 150 logins to show it was from scholastic members
or adults members that read the online magazine article. In fact, it
could have had more members that post within the United States Chess
Federation Issue Forum that read the online article just so they have
something to write and post about within the United States Chess
Federation Issue Forum. Even if the email notification alerts about
the new articles do work to attract more members to log in and read
the online articles: at best it could only double the amount of
logins.
With the comment posted by Jennifer Shahade about the login level to
read the cover story of Chess Life for Kids being under one hundred
and fifty. It is just solid evidence that the online magazine is a
total failure.
