supporters. They also tend to be 'challenged' at the keyboard, as
we've seen in countless Innes and Mitchell posts.
Well, "low" is a relative term. Most of us who post here are "low"
relative to Polgar, or to Truong for that matter.
At first, I believed the inchoate posts of the hardcore PT/SP
supporters to stem from hero worship. And that may be part of it, with
PT filling a role of "Robin" to Polgar's "Bat Woman".
But, beyond that, I think there's a desire on the part of many of
their supporters to be "players", insiders, someone who counts, a
valued member of a winning team, someone who can influence events in
the world of chess. Rob actually posted (!) over at ChessDiscussion,
"Key man insurance for Mr. Nolan. Here is how you do it: (Call me and
I will let you know)".
The Polgar team makes 'em feel like that's just what they are.
How many GMs have the knack of treating players rated 1000-1300 as
valued colleagues? Polgar and Truong seem virtually unmatched in their
ability to reach out to folks like this and make them believe they're
confidants, part of the inner circle. The Polgar blogs contain photo
after photo of this attractive chess legend beaming next to a local,
often with his arm around her. It reminds me of a musician
cultivating the fan base.
Think that local is gonna believe some attorney droning through a
Power Point presentation? Or Susan and Paul?
And they've zeroed in on Scholastic Chess. The parents! Once there's
a picture on the web of your kid with a trophy, proudly standing next
to Susan Polgar, any attack on her or her "team" is an attack on your
own self-image. A friend of mine once called this "peasant loyalty".
Think that parent is gonna side with dynamic Bill Goichberg? Or Susan
and Paul?
Think that parent, in any way, will take what they believe to be
lecherous old Sam Sloan's side against Susan and Paul? As Phil says,
"heuch!" (I don't know what that means, but I've learned to use it in
context).
Browse the posts on ChessDiscussion. Some of them are amazing. People
who attempt the persona of the level-headed, rational, fair and
impartial man in venues like the USCF forums come off as drooling
sycophants over there ("You go, girl", "You're the best, Susan").
Think those true believers are going to be impressed by long accounts
of ISPs, IP numbers, and newsgroup posts. Or just smugly announce,
"Anything can be hacked" ?
The ability to harness the energy and resources of the mediocre could
be a positive force. But management by celebrity has its down side...
That was one awesome post Mike!
