Rob, I'm not sure why you bring up Sam Sloan here.

Hey, while playing too many games, as he
told me, Rob Mitchell did indeed feel like an
800 rated player; and he once again tells us
he has a ton of games going at once, though
eager for more. But in other games I noted
a distinct difference in resistance-- as if the
power had been restored, the flashlight put
away and the lights turned on.

As my number of games drop I can spend more time on my moves.
Basically almost all of my games are at a blitz pace with less and 30
seconds spent reviewing my moves. And yes, the majority of my games
are played against players at least 400 rating points higher. I do get
destroyed. My worst was against Yelena Dembo.

Doesn't that tell you that you should play fewer games, and devote
more time to them? Then again you may not wish to improve as a player,
but simply 'belong'. And that's OK.

"It's not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the
strong man stumbled or where the doer of great deeds could have done
them better. The credit belongs to the man who is in the arena. Whose face
is marred by dust and sweat and blood. Who strives valiantly, who errs
and comes up short again and again.

He is obviously talking about Sam Sloan
here.

And who, while daring greatly, spends
himself in a worthy cause so that his place may not be among those
cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."

An excellent speech, though obviously
pure ad hominem; kill the messengers--
yes, *all* of them! In fact, this speech
makes it appear that such men as SS,
who are reckless and clumsy, are the
greats, while responsible folk just don't
count. The ploy is to change the subject--
from the criticisms themselves (which we
may presume are indefensible), to the
critics. Such ploys often fool the weak-
minded, but you can't fool all of the
people, all of the time.

sometime when playing or settin up a tournament you end up with more
games than intended. But eventually that number dwindles. I enjoy the
play. And I have improved.

Hey! Some day, if you work hard and study, you may be able to get up
to 1000 or so, and then you will be able to give us a real game!

Sam Sloan
