How remailers work.

Written so even Ray can understand.

The author writes a letter, and includes the destination address.
It is put in Box 1 and locked.
Remailer 3 is the only one in the world with the key to Box 1.

"Send to Remailer 3" is written on Box 1.

Box 1 is put into Box 2 and locked.
Remailer 2 is the only one in the world with the key to Box 2.

"Send to Remailer 2" is written on Box 2

Box 2 is put into Box 3 and locked.
Remailer 1 is the only one in the world with the key to Box 3.

The author sends Box 3 by carrier to Remailer 1.
The carrier (the ISP) only knows that they have a box, and it is going
to Remailer 1. They don't know where it will end up, nor what is
inside.

Remailer 1 unlocks Box 3, and throws it away. Remailers don't like to
keep old boxes (records). Remailer 1 now has a locked box and a
destination (Remailer 2). Remailer 1 knows he something, but not what
it is.

He tosses the Box in a big pile for later forwarding to to Remailer 2.
Sometime later, he sends all the boxes he has for Remailer 2 out in
mass.

Remailer 2 gets Box 2 from Remailer 1, but has no idea where Remailer
1 got it from. He unlocks and discards Box 2. He notes the address on
Box 1 and puts it in a pile for later shipping to Remailer 3.

Remailer 3 gets Box 1 and unlocks it, revealing the letter and it's
destination address.
Remailer 3 knows nothing of the Author, or Remailer 1. He throws away
the box.
Some time later he sends the letter to it's destination.

The destination receives the letter. All the destination knows is that
they received an email from Remailer 3.

So, assume you were watching the ISP of the author. He sends Box 3 to
remailer 1. No one knows what is in the box.

Sometime later, a package completely different from Box 3 arrives
somewhere in the world. It came from Remailer 3. There is no
traceable means of connecting the two. NONE.

How do you prove what was in each box? The remailers don't keep
records, and the encryption (lock) is world-class. Do you think you
are going to subpoena all the remailers? If so, you would have to be
pretty good at international law, and you would be succeeding in
something that NO ONE has ever been able to do before.
