Yes, staff is almost always a corporation's greatest expense. This
doesn't excuse spending $11K on an internet insurance policy for a
moderated chess discussion site.
But it does put it in perspective. A good forum can be very profitable too.
Not that USCF would ever figure that out (had they hired ME they would
have).
I've turned a profit online for several years with far less to work with
than USCF ever had. Making money online for them should be like shooting
fish in a barrel, since they have a goldmine of a distribution list, and a
good forum is part of that.
If you need to be careful you need to put new posts into a delay
hopper until the moderator approves them. That is a far more
intelligent idea than creating your own entity to moderate nasty
comments and then having to spend money to protect yourself in case
someone doesn't like a nasty comment on the moderated board.
They'd need the insurance regardless, as many things can go wrong. The
presence of the insurance makes lawsuits less likely in the first place.
This had to be a lawyer's advice that led to this.
Not necessarily, but it's one of the more worthwhile expenses.
