Unless he actually said; Die Jünger hat triumphiert. If an umlaut is

The anecdote is quite well known. I never heard or read it with an
umlaut.

Yes - I wonder if it was written or spoken? since at least in English it
is
more common to speak of the 'disciple' overcoming the master, rather than
the young, the old.

But the whole joke is based on the slight difference in age of two
rather old guys, not on some master/student relation.

**very good - the context would provide the sense of it, as you continue to
note...

Also I think,
that it is as well common to say, that someone representing one group
triumphes over another: youth triumphs over age, the south triumphs
over the north, and so on. And one has to know that "Jünger" (btw. it
would be "Der Jünger" not "Die Jünger") is usually used in a religious
context. So, the followers of Jesus are called "Jünger", but you
wouldn't call the followers of a teacher, master, politician and so on
"Jünger" (except in an ironic way).

**i see - i suppose the sense i intended would be French, as in protege, and
the the term 'disciple' is applied in English in more liberal, non religious
forms - not so in German!

Die Meisterhaft gilt oft für Egoisme, nein? Vis-a-vis Becker!

Wie bitte?

Albert Becker, born 1896 -

So, ok, not Boris Becker. But I still don't understand the meaning of
this line.

**But you understand the reference? [from Goethe] In English it would be
something like 'mastery passes often for egotism'. But to understand the
reference you would have to understand my own context, rather rhetorically
about Becker, and Becker's absent books, was in praise of his efforts - and
the absense of his works, and references to a substantial chess pioneer in
contemporary literature, something of a slight upon him and them.

Cordially, Phil Innes
