The anecdote is quite well known. I never heard or read it with an umlaut.
Yes - I wonder if it was written or spoken? since at least in English it is
more common to speak of the 'disciple' overcoming the master, rather than
the young, the old.
But the whole joke is based on the slight difference in age of two
rather old guys, not on some master/student relation. Also I think,
that it is as well common to say, that someone representing one group
triumphes over another: youth triumphs over age, the south triumphs
over the north, and so on. And one has to know that "Jünger" (btw. it
would be "Der Jünger" not "Die Jünger") is usually used in a religious
context. So, the followers of Jesus are called "Jünger", but you
wouldn't call the followers of a teacher, master, politician and so on
"Jünger" (except in an ironic way).
Die Meisterhaft gilt oft für Egoisme, nein? Vis-a-vis Becker!
