In old Russia (till about the end of 18th century) the Queen could also

international rules. I can imagine it was so in some other countries.
I doubt any such tradition ever existed in the U.S.
I also doubt that.
Me too - yeah..
Some people (such as that housekeeper for example) are just clueless.
Yeah - silly bitch..
It seems possible that she could have been misled by a poorly written
set of rules, if that's what she used to learn how to play chess.
I have noticed that some cheap chess sets come with poorly
written sets of rules, which sometimes 1) don't mention en passant
2) don't mentioning castling or 3) don't distinguish between
checkmate and stalemate. I cannot recall ever seeing a
set of rules that 'explained' that the queen also may move
like a knight, but I suppose that if it's written poorly enough,
someone could have misunderstood it in that way.
Good points - yeah, good idea..
Of course, cluelessness has a long standing tradition in the U.S.
There's ample ignorance in every society of which I know.
In general, Americans (who tend to be self-congratulatory) seem
to be less aware than most other peoples of their own ignorance.
Yeah, some 'ignorant' once likened the condition to bliss - yeah..
