I've never been able to visualise the whole board. At the time when I
played tournament chess, I used to "see" the board through a "window"
of 4x4 squares, and when I was analysing the position I was able slide
this 4x4 window around the 8x8 board to see the different parts of the
board. This worked reasonably well, and I think the average player
should be able to do it with enough practise (I wasn't much more than
an average player myself).

Today, after more than a decade of inactivity, I can hardly visualise
a single square.
