Re: Progressive chess problem

 Try 8. Ke7 Rb8 Rxb2 g5 g4 gxf3 fxg2 gxh1R#. You
might do better with 7.7 Ne2, but then Black's 8th
move can swallow up a lot of material, assuming there
is no mate. [...]

But there is, with 8. Ke7 Rb8 Rxb2 d4 d3 d2 Ng4 Nxf2#.

You can use Popeye (http://www.xs4all.nl/~sanguis/popeye/ for the latest version) to solve series-mates. Here's the popeye syntax:

Some examples:

>>1. d4
>>2. c5 cxd4
>>3. e4 e5 Bd2
>>4. e6 d3 dxc2 cxd1Q+
>>5. Kxd1 Ba5 Bxd8 Be7 Bxf8
>>6. Kxf8 f5 Nh6 Nc6 d5 Bd7

To find if there's a ser-#7 after black's series of 6:

begin
fors r4k1r/pp1b2pp/2s1p2s/3pPp2/8/8/PP3PPP/RS1K1BSR
stip ser-#7
opt move maxsol 5
end

>>7. Ba6 Bxb7 Bxa8 Bxc6 Bxd7 Na3 Nf3

To find if there's a ser-#8 after white's series of 7:

begin
fors 5k1r/p2B2pp/4p2s/3pPp2/8/S4S2/PP3PPP/R2K3R
stip ser-#8
opt move maxsol 5 halfduplex
end
