I wasn't asking about 10AD, but the eleventh century, i.e. 1000-1100AD. I
know that the rules for chess have been altered over the years, and I'd like
to know what the common rules in north Europe (or Byzantium) were in the
late eleventh century, so that I can sit in my authentic-looking Viking (or
Norman or Saxon, depending on the show) costume and play chess with
authentic-looking pieces and, should someone ask (which the audience is
bound to do) be able to tell them the rules of that era.
Usually, I play Hnefatafl, and a lot of people are interested in that.
Almost invariably, someone asks if they had chess, and I say yes, but I'd
really like to be able to explain (and play) as the Vikings, Saxons and
Normans would.
If no record of the rules nine hundred years ago exist, I'd appreciate the
oldest recorded rules available.
I hoped that people so interested in chess (myself, I like playing but I
just dabble) that they follow and discuss current events might have books on
the history of the game, and be happy to share their expertise.
