Increased variance

Chess is just on the brink of having too little complexity for modern
chessplayers. It ought to be somewhat more complicated. Chinese Chess
contains more variability than Fide-Chess. Unlike the latter,
computers haven't yet beaten the grandmasters in Chinese Chess.
Japanese Chess is even more complicated.
I have suggested many methods of tackling this problem of not enough
variance in chess, which leads to drawish positions in today's
technically accomplished chess. Comparatively, in Chinese and Japanese
Chess draws are very uncommon. Possibly, a simple method would be to
extend the castling rules:

Another possibility is to add extra empty corner squares, plus
extended castle:

There exist software implementations and email presets for these variants.
See links at the bottom of the page.
