you hold Q10972, A7, K1053, A4
your methods state that splinters are limited to a maximum of 15 dummy
points
At matchpoints, the auction is
you partner
1S 2N (Jacoby)
4S(min) 5C (first round control)
5H 5S
???
a) your next call is???
b) Partner's hand is AKJ3, KQJxxx, xxx, void --- would you have bid
his hand differently?
Assuming this is ACBL land, and the bidding methods are Standard
American-ish (cue bids given are first-round controls only)...
a) I see two choices (in no particular order):
(1) 6S, placing the contract knowing that the opposition don't have
two quick [diamond] winners to cash and the guarded DK is right-sided
against the opening lead. This relies on two assumptions: that the
responder went to 5S because he/she didn't hear the opener cue a
diamond control, and that the responder has top trumps (not
unreasonable). In the worst of all worlds, the opps have D AQ and
either the SA or SK.
(2) Pass with a minimum and play 5S, hoping 6 doesn't make, or that
few get there.
I don't see 6D as a cuebid showing second-round control as being
helpful - you can't stay out of slam and it gives into to the
opponents that starting in diamonds isn't a good idea.
b) With the responder's hand, a strong jump shift to 3H looks like an
option showing a very strong hand with serious interest in slam (say
19+ dummy points per the SAYC booklet), support for the opener's
major, and a source of tricks in dummy. This would be very
informative for the opener. Over 3H, the partnership can have several
options for continuation (which ought to be agreed upon): show a
second suit, start cuebidding controls, or jump straight to some form
of Blackwood with first- or second-round control of all the side
suits. This still gives the partnership the option of stopping fairly
safely in 5S if two aces are missing, looking for kings to try for a
grand, or going on to a decent small slam with three aces, knowing
that the DK is in the right place.
Hope this is reasonable and helpful.
