I've decided I don't care, and will go with the 1NT response. It was, I
guess, really a non-problem--just fiddling around.
FWIW, on page 297 of _Two Over One Game Force_ (1989), Hardy says that a 1D
response to 1C "[c]ould be artificial with two or three diamonds, no four
card major and not enough to respond one notrump." And though my personal
recollections are probably not worth that much, I KNOW that when reading
this stuff in the 80s, I found the 1D-1H response advocated also, and
remembered it just because it seemed a stretch, a bit too cute.

Some time ago there was a thread discussing these temporizing bids in
Walsh, ie sometimes 3 card suits with weak hands. If anyone knows where
to find development of subsequent auctions--like where your partner
splinters in response to your 3 card heart suit--I'd really like to know.
Is this treatment really playable? I only ask b/c I'm looking for ways to
field-side NT when playing a weak NT system.
