C'mon, John (if you're still out there). You've always made it clear
that you regard this sort of tournament as the true test of skill:
Absolutely. The *only* true test of an individual's skill.
Now
there's one coming up, and it's going to be well-attended. There are a
fair few experts who have committed themselves, and I'll be playing,
too. Get the train in from Reading and prove yourself right!
Sunday morning, I was raring to go. On account of the snow, I had
already re-checked train times on my way to church. Service over, I
was just about to proceed like a bat out of hell (so to speak) for the
station and the scheduled fast train, when the Padre intercepted me
for one of his little chats. In the course of which I happened to
mention the purpose of my proposed journey. "Hmm," he said in that
voice he occasionally employs, "playing cards on the Sabbath, eh? And
I *was* going to ask you to help out shifting the pews for the spring-
cleaning of the tiles." There was no mistaking his tone. Quite a
stickler, our Padre; though some of us do feel he is a trifle low
church for a parish such as ours. Anyway, to cut a long story short,
that was the Young Chelsea Individual scuppered for yet another year.
Still, browsing the Young Chelsea website, I can see a good time was
had by all, and it is such a nice gesture for the club to remember
Brian Callaghan in this way.
