@q3g2000prf.googlegroups.com:
Recently I was having a bridge discussion with my pard and she
informed me that she would no longer be making weak 2 bids with three
cards in the other major. My initial reaction was that pard had gone
bonkers. Why would anyone with a normal preempt let a 3card holding in
the other major inhibit them? HOWEVER, of late i have seen or heard
several players indicate that a weak 2 with a side 3 card major is not
a good idea.
When did this holding become a consideration for whether or not we
should preempt? (Mind you i must admit that for me opening a preempt
with a side bad 4card major is NOT out of the question so this new
concept strikes me as quite strange )
Anyone care help me understand this new (to me) concept? I'm an old
dog and this new trick will require some exceptional persuasion:)
It's extremely dangerous to open a weak two with a doubleton in the other
major. If partner has 6 of the other major, and only a singleton in yours,
you play a foolish 6-1 fit when a 6-2 fit was available.
Some people are OK with opening a weak two with a singleton in the other
major, but I find it risky. When I do so, inevitably, partner has a
mediocre seven bagger in the other major and something like a singleton or
void in mine, and once again we play an inferior fit.
I have no problem with opening a weak two with a void in the other major -
however, most experts say it's unwise to open weak twos with a side void,
as partner will be unable to judge the fit properly.
Personally, I don't open a lot of weak twos.
Cheers ... Bill.
