The way I usually play, partner is showing slam interest since he
didn't bid 4S at his second turn. (Normally I don't like fast
arrival, but it's acceptable over a 1NT rebid by opener, which
narrowly limits opener's hand.) First of all, you need to discuss
this auction to make sure you're on the same wavelength.
Well, it looks like I'm practically alone on this one; everyone else
seemed to think it showed 6-4. I guess this proves that my last
sentence is correct.
It also proves that weak jump shifts are one of the worse treatments
ever invented. If you don't have a strong jump shift available, then
when you do pick up a hand that would have made a strong jump shift,
you have to bid around the bush, such as going through NMF or fourth
suit forcing or third suit forcing to try to get your strength across,
and even then you may not be able to find a way to bid such that your
partner is sure to know what you mean, as evidenced by all the other
responses on this thread. I notice that of all the posters who said
that 4S shows no slam interest, only one of them said how partner
should have bid on a hand that *does* have slam interest, and that
poster didn't explain how he should have bid the slam-interest hand
over the 3NT third-round bid that you apparently should have made
according to your system.
So my advice would be: get rid of WJS. They never come up anyway.
