You are exactly right. If you bid 4D, partner will misunderstand. He
will frown and make faces and snarl silently, then bid 4S. (We do
play Smolen, and that is how the auction went. Had he bid 3S over 3H,
we do have 5C available as exclusion.)

Partner opens 1NT, 14.5-17. Partner may also tend toward off-shape
notrump openings, not wildly so, but 6-3-2-2 or 5-4-2-2 would not be

How do you approach this hand?
Stayman first:
If partner has a four-card Major, I bid the other Major at the
cheapest level. We play that as a forcing raise of opener's Major. My
plan is to reach check for a grand and bid six otherwise.
Otherwise, I bid 3H, Smolen
If partner bids 3S over 3H, I bid 5C, exclusion RKC
If partner bids 3NT over 3H, I bid 4D, natural and completely
descriptive. Which partner will misunderstand.
