I played (natural, RKCB) for the very first time with this guy and this
came up. He had KQ86, AJ9, AQ632, 7 and I had A732, 4, J95, AQT84. MPs,
non-vul, opponents silent, bidding (not the most scientific one) went
1D - 2C
2S - 4NT
5C - 6S
6NT
Down four.
Me: "Hmm...?"
He: "I thought you might have only 3 spades since your first round bid
wasn't spades."
Might I?
6N is a stupid bid - it is saying he does not trust partner to know what he
is doing. Everyone knows that NT scores higher than spades if they make the
same tricks so when you bid 6S you were telling him 6N was not sensible.
I would say however that 4N was wrong - how do you know you shouldn't be in
7S? You should start with 4H and see if partner can cue the club King in
which case 7S may be biddable. On second thoughts however this guy may pass
4H!
