Re: Careless or Irrational?

"Irrational" means something like underruffing, or pointlessly playing
a suit from the bottom. Say you held:

AKQJT9876542
A
void
void

It would be "irrational" to play the spade 2 first.

In this case, it is careless to overtake the spade A, not irrational.

In cases like this, I have been known to show my hand and say
something like "I think I can get home from here." To be honest, what
claims you can make depends on where you are playing. I just got back
from the ACBL nationals, and nobody is there to win on technicalities.

However, making a proper claim is part of the game. All declarer had
to do was say "Overtaking the second spade." If he could fail to see
the spade blockage, he could also fail to see that it was necessary to
finish the spades before the clubs.

I would not only give the defense a club trick, I would probably
consider the appeal without merit if S appealed.

EBU rules, if that makes a difference. Towards the end of a hand played in
NT, the lead is in dummy which holds:

S: KQ
H: x
D: -
C: xx

Declarer holds:

S: AJ10
H: -
D: -
C: AQ

The KC has gone.

Declarer lays down his hand and states that he is playing KS and if he
overtakes hand is good. The defence then correctly point out that this
blocks the spades. However this only matters if, after overtaking, declarer
fails to notice the blockage and for no particular reason immediately
switches clubs, cashing both his outside entries before returning to the
spades. Would you rule that an immediate club switch is simply careless and
therefore award the last trick to the defence or would it be irrational for
declarer to play in this way?
