@m79g2000cwm.googlegroups.com:

In scenario #1, the partnership agrees to play 10-12 1NT
opening bids, but Chicken is so afraid of penalties that he never opens
with a mini 1NT, choosing to pass or upgrade to a 1NT rebid showing
13-15. Tiger opens all 10-12 point balanced hands 1NT.

I find it hard to imagine this not being concidered a different system.
Chicken DOES NOT play a 1N opening here. Perhaps what was meant was that
1N was only opened on some 12 counts. If that is so then the auction with
Chick opening: 1N-2N amounts to a transfer to 3N.

Here is the relevant part of Rubens's response:

Thank you for your letter. Regarding your questions (and adding some of
my own on the same general topic):

(1) It is a semantic matter, depending on the definition of "system,"
when a system changes. My guess is that most people think of system as
a set of agreements (hence The Bridge World's glossary entry:
"System--the collection of partnership understandings about bidding").
Granting this, technically, one's system is independent of how its
users act in practice (and variations within the system framework are
usually termed matters of style, whether personal or partnership).

***********

Obviously I am biased, but I think Rubens's response is quite right.
Granting his definition of system = collection of agreements and style
= implementation of the prior agreements codified as a system, then
almost by definition stylistic differences cannot be said to constitute
different systems.

Not seeing the whole of his comments I can only guess but I think you are
misinterpreting his comments. As he said, 'technically' systems are
independent of how thay are used. But useage affects agreements. And note
that he comments state that differences WITHIN that framework of
agreements amount to style.

Maybe it would be better to focus on those agreements.

Do the two of you agree, in general, on the range of values that a one
level opening shows? It would seem not. Since this seems to be a rather
important part of a system, I would say that you are playing different
systems.

That is different from saying that openings show a good 11 point hand or
better and then disagreeing about just what it takes for a good 11. Good
Controls, a long suit, spots in long suits, or even some secondary
evaluation method. Each of your will feel you hold a good 11 when you
open in this case.

The same could be said if you used some other common range. Maybe he
upgrades controls and good suits more than you and will open some 11
counts your would pass with a weak NT. If your system is flexible, maybe
he opens 1M more often than you on hands where 1N was also the proper
description.

Sorry, I cannot give a clear break between style and system. But I think
that the snippet you posted from Mr. Rubens is less clear than you may
think.
