1C. Sometimes they overcall in spades instead. Sometimes partner
doesn't bid spades.
p.s. I have no sympathy whatsoever for 1D in a 4CM system or indeed any
system without Walsh responses where partner bids up the line. I have
some mild sympathy for 1D if partner will respond 1S on a 4162 and pass
a 2C rebid.
