Euphrates & Tigris is brilliant for 3 and 2 and pretty good, though
much more random, for four. If he grew up playing SPI games, he should
have no trouble with the rules and it's not hard to teach.
Alternately, Columbia Games has two configurable wargames--Victory, a
generic WWII-like game, and Wizard Kings, which is Victory with
magic--which allow multiplayer as well as two-player play, and which
are light enough to learn easily but offer substantial play.
