It covers only the ancient era, and only the civilizations around the
Mediterranean, but it does have technology advances. The focus is on
building cities to get trade goods, and then trading those with other
players in order to buy technology. Most people agree that the
Advanced Civilization expansion makes it better, but it tends to take
an hour or two longer.
You should still be able to find it used on eBay, and it IS still one
of the best mutli-player board games out there, if you have the time.
If you're looking for similar things, another old game that's really
good is Age of Renaissance, it also good--it covers the Renaissance to
early modern period in Europe. Both game will be fairly expensive on
eBay.
