My understanding is that the third (current) edition of Napoleon is
basically identical to the AH edition except that the pieces reprent
smaller military units, meaning there are more of them. If that is so,
the third edition rulebook is almost certainly more useful than the
second edition (Avalon Hill).

According to the third edition rules, the road limit for retreats in a
single battle round is the same as for a movement turn (2 per battle
turn for a major road, and 1 per battle turn for a minor road). Thus,
any units which cannot retreat before the first battle turn must
endure a round of battle and then may retreat before the start of the
next turn. I would think this rule would translate easily to the
second edition.
