My approach is a bit different. It involves pattern recognition,
using GNU to establish the patterns, then knowning the "basics," as
you will find in places like Magriel's "Backgammon" book, you
gradually learn why the patterns you see with GNU's play are best. If
you are going to play a lot of games/matches, this is an approach that
might make you into an "advanced" player more quickly, and you might
enjoy it more.
