David,
You slightly misunderstand my posting. I'm not at all "certain" that
the closeout is correct here. My certainty is about what I would have
played. This is surely very different from claiming certainty about
the correct play. For example, as White in a game of chess, I'm almost
certain to play 1. e4. However, I don't believe that this is
objectively better than all alternatives.
I understood very well that you were just _saying_ something about
what you would have done. I assumed that you must have some reason
for the preference, because I couldn't imagine why you'd think
that comments about what play you would have made, as opposed
to comments about what play is better, would be of any interest
to anyone.
See other posts for why I don't like the closeout in the other position
-- that is a position where X has real escaping difficulties and needs
a 5.
As to the "value" of postings, I'm often in a dilemma because I have an
opinion on the play but don't have any analysis to add to what's
already being said. On these occasions, I at least show an interest by
giving an unsupported opinion. The alternatives are to post nothing or
to just copy what others have said.
Um. I really hadn't meant to get into this, sorry. But when you
put it that way I find it hard not to point out that simply not
posting anything to a thread _is_ a real alternative. You seem
to be taking it as axiomatic that it's not - I don't see why.
Don't take that wrong. I'm not saying you're being bad [insert
list of similar disclaimers...] But there _are_ people around
here who post much less frequently than you do - when ___ or
___ _does_ post something I always make certain to read what
he has to say...
