Quarterback
QB Byron Leftwich (ATL) has landed in Atlanta. The NFL Network's Adam
Schefter is reporting that
Leftwich and the Falcons agreed to terms on a two-year deal. Joey
Harrington has hung in there but he's
obviously struggling as the Falcons QB. Coach Bobby Petrino said Monday
that Harrington is holding the
ball too long and showing a lack of confidence in his play.
"I think right now Joey is playing a little bit conservative, a little bit
not to throw the interception," Petrino
said. "Therefore it is causing him to hold the ball. He just needs to open
it up more with confidence and play
to go win the game."
Translated through the coach speak decoder that means if Harrington
continues to take sacks like this, we'll
be seeing Leftwich soon.
QB Steve McNair (BAL) is expected back in practice Wednesday and the team
is hopeful he'll be ready to
go Sunday.
QB Jon Kitna (DET) appeared to be fine Monday according to coach Rod
Marinelli. Kitna suffered what's
being called a mild concussion. Marinelli said Kitna did not show any
symptoms of a concussion or have a
lingering headache.
QB Damon Huard (KC) HC Herm Edwards confirmed on Monday that quarterback
Damon Huard would
remain as the team's starter in Week 3.
QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) Should Tarvaris Jackson not be able to play this
Sunday (due to a groin injury)
against the Chiefs, No. 3 quarterback Kelley Holcomb could jump up to No. 1
status in less than a week.
Jackson suffered a groin injury last Sunday versus the Lions, and was less
than effective throwing four
interceptions. HC Brad Childress maintained that if healthy, Jackson would
start this weekend.
QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) will remain the starter as long as he's healthy
according to coach Eric Mangini.
"Chad's the starter and I'm the backup. That's been clearly communicated,"
Clemens said Monday.
"Whoever's healthy and ready to go will go on Sunday and we trust the
coaches to put us in the best position
to hopefully get that first victory."
"If he can, he will (start)," coach Eric Mangini said. "We'll just assess
it throughout the week, but if he's able
to, he will."
QB Josh McCown (OAK) HC Lane Kiffin will stick with Josh McCown as the
starter despite his five
interceptions and five fumbles (one lost) as well as several miscues after
two games. McCown threw for just
73 yards in Sunday's game against the Broncos and missed a wide open WR
Jerry Porter for the potential
game-winning touchdown. McCown is also fighting through two injuries, a
sprained right foot and a cracked
index finger on his throwing hand. Nevertheless, Kiffin is giving McCown
the nod when the Raiders host
Cleveland this Sunday. "Right now I feel he puts us in a better position to
win," Kiffin said. "Will that be the
case next Monday? I don't know."
Running Back
RB Travis Henry (DEN) sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter of the
team's Week 2 game. He later
returned to the game. The injury is not considered to be serious. "It's
good. I just tweaked it," Henry said. "I
knew I had to suck it up and get back in there and help us get the win."
RB Kevin Jones (DET) Coach Rod Marinelli is optimistic that tailback Kevin
Jones will make his first
appearance of the year for the Detroit Lions in Sunday's game at
Philadelphia according to the Detroit
News. Tatum Bell will continue to start, Marinelli said. Jones will be
limited to 15 to 20 plays in a backup
role.
"I'm optimistic, but I don't want to tell you something I can't back up 100
percent," Marinelli said Monday at
his weekly press conference. "I feel good because he feels good," Marinelli
said.
RB Vernand Morency (GB) will likely be back to practice Wednesday and is
making improvement. He's
practiced the last two Wednesday's but had to pull back on Thursday due to
soreness.
RB Cadillac Williams (TB) should get more carries in the coming weeks. "I
want to see him carry the ball a
lot more. He needs to get himself ready to carry the ball a lot more," HC
Jon Gruden said. "He needs to get
hit. He needs to play and work himself through some of his rust and
inactivity I forced him through in the
preseason. All I heard about him was about not carrying the ball in the
preseason. Well, you're going to get it
a lot in the coming weeks, my friend."
Wide Receiver
WR Mark Bradley (CHI) was hoping for more playing time. HC Lovie Smith put
that issue to rest on
Monday by saying, "I mean, Mark's our fifth receiver. It's hard to talk
about where the fifth receiver fits in.
No team in the country can talk about where the fifth receiver fits in.
Mark's one of our guys who will dress.
He'll get some occasional plays. And we'll go from there. Right now we have
to get in a position where
we're taking care of one, two and three, and then possibly four before we
get to [Bradley]."
WR Greg Jennings (GB) PackersNews.com reports that Coach Mike McCarthy
plans to wait until later in
the week to test receiver Greg Jennings' injured hamstring. The last two
weeks, Jennings has tried to practice
on Wednesday only to drop out later in the week. He has missed the first
two regular-season games. "I may
hold him a little longer in the week because I want to give him every
chance to get ready for this game,"
McCarthy said on Monday.
WR Andre Johnson (HOU) is doubtful to play when the team plays the
Indianapolis Colts this Sunday. The
Texans had an MRI done on Johnson's left knee Monday morning and it
revealed a sprain. "I would say that
he is doubtful for that football game," Kubiak said. "We'll know more in
the next couple of days. There was
no swelling, but there's definitely a sprain there. It's a concern right
now." "He has a knee sprain," Kubiak
said. "That's the good news and the bad news. We feel fortunate. Andre is
going to be fine. Is he going to be
fine in one week? Or is he going to be fine in four weeks? We're still in
the evaluation stage. We don't
know."
WR Matt Jones (JAX) has not endeared himself to HC Jack Del Rio so far this
season. Del Rio said Jones'
demeanor on the field is lethargic at times when he's not the main receiver
in the play call. The coach has
already spoken to Jones about it privately and said Jones has improved in
practice. Now Jones is getting
called out publicly. "I'm not comfortable with some of the body language
he's exhibiting," Del Rio said, "I talk
to my players all the time when I see things, but I'd like to see it carry
over in the games."
WR Devery Henderson (NO) After three dropped passes, including one for a
potential touchdown, Devery
Henderson was benched. He let two slip through his hands on the first drive
and also missed an assignment,
according to HC Sean Payton. Payton downplayed the decision to sit
Henderson, but admitted he was not
pleased with the miscues. "A lot of that was me in working a rotation,
trying to keep them fresh. But my
expectation of how he should play, and I think his as well, is higher than
that."
Tight End
Kicker
PK Morten Andersen (ATL) Once again, Morten Andersen is a Falcon as the
team waived Matt Prater
who had been terrible.
Offensive Line
OL Baltimore Ravens (BAL) T Jonathan Ogden has made a quick recovery from
his toe injury that some
feared might be career threatening just a few days ago. The injury was not
as serious as earlier feared. It was
more a situation of scar tissue and he's expected to be in practice
Wednesday and is hopeful to play Sunday.
OL Washington Redskins (WAS) RG Randy Thomas will be out for an indefinite
period and possibly the
rest of the season due to a torn left triceps suffered during the first
quarter of Monday night's game against
the Philadelphia Eagles. Thomas will undergo Wednesday surgery to repair
it. The nine year veteran left
Lincoln Financial Field on Monday night with his arm in a sling fearing the
worst, and an MRI exam on
Tuesday confirmed the damage. How long the injury will sideline Thomas
won't be resolved until during the
operation, when surgeons get a closer look at the extent of the tear. If
the tear is a significant one, Thomas
could be out the rest of the year and could wind up on injured reserve.
Defensive Line
DL Tank Johnson (DAL) The Cowboys have signed suspended DT Tank Johnson to
a deal Tuesday,
according to his agent, Jerrold Colton. Johnson has at most six games left
on an eight-game suspension for
violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, even though he has been
unsigned. At the time, commissioner
Roger Goodell announced Johnson's suspension, he left open the possibility
of reducing it to six games,
although Johnson would have to apply for early reinstatement.
DL Jamal Williams (SD) suffered only a "slightly" hyper-extended elbow in
Sunday night's loss at New
England. "He felt good," HC Norv Turner said. "He seems to recover very
quickly."
Linebacker
LB James Harrison (PIT) will be limited in practice today as the team uses
caution with a stiff neck that
looked much worse when Harrison lay still on the field Sunday. But HC Mike
Tomlin said Harrison should
be ready to play Sunday against the 49ers.
LB Matt Wilhelm (SD) has a strained calf. HC Norv Turner said the injury is
in a different spot than the
strain that kept Wilhelm out most of the preseason, but the coach indicated
Wilhelm could miss Sunday's
game at Green Bay.
Defensive Back
DB Jordan Babineaux (SEA) The Seahawks and S/DB Jordan Babineaux agreed to
a five-year extension
that could be worth up to $15 million.
General Team News
TM Arizona Cardinals (ARI) The Cardinals have re-signed LB Brandon Johnson
and released C Nick
Leckey today.
TM Atlanta Falcons (ATL) The Falcons announced on Monday that they have
waived kicker Matt Prater
and signed Morten Andersen.
TM New York Jets (NYJ) The Jets placed Pro Bowl kick returner-cornerback
Justin Miller on injured
reserve Tuesday due to a knee injury.
