Do you remember it well enough that you could still explain the
mechanics of the greenhouse effect?

I remember it being taught in school as well, including as it applies to planet's atmospheres as well as why automobiles get so hot parked in the sun.

In simple laymans terms, infrared from the sun passes through the glass/atmosphere but the heat cannot as easily pass back out. Changes in the composition of the glass or atmosphere can affect how much heat is retained.

It wasn't until more recently that I learned such details as that methane produces a much greater greenhouse effect than CO2, for example.

There are vast amounts of methane trapped in seabeds. Do you have any idea of the catastrophe that could result should enough of that escape?

Personally, I don't remember any talk at all about climate change, one
way or another in the 60's.

Hmmm. The greenhouse effect was even featured in some science-fiction novels of the era -- such as being used to "terraform" planets that were more distant from he sun than the earth. And the concern in the '70s was that we were entering another ice age.

Are you sure they weren't just talking about actual greenhouses, like
those used to grow flowers, etc?

I'm sure. The effect is named for greenhouses since that's how they work and people are familiar with them.
